November 2020 - Website Update!!
Apprently the trick is not to have anything chronologial on your website. At some point I'll go back and fill in all the blanks properly.
This month I'm working with Artlink in various musical settings. I'm teaching drum kit to individuals and using music as a means of facilitating socialising and creativity in a group setting. Really looking forward to working with some new people in my visor.

November 2017 - I'm in a film
|
I got a text from the amazingly legendary Jim Sutherland asking if I could be a medieval drummer in a blockbuster film. "OK" I said. Jim was Music Director for Netflix film Outlaw King starring Chris Pine. The gig was miming to Jim's soundtrack for this film about Robert the Bruce, directed by David Mackenzie (Young Adam). I was part of a group of drummers in the English Army. We were trudging up and down in the rain just outside Glasgow. The best thing about this gig was the banter between all the drummers. Can you imagine? Jim had obviously hand picked drummers with great chat. Stu Brown, Doug Hough, Andrew Horne of the Porridgemen, Joe Hertzberg who plays with my old band Big Fat Panda and no less than TWO Aberfeldy drummers. Murray Briggs and dear old friend Ian Stoddart. We all followed Stoddies lead as he was in a film with Johnny Depp called Chocolat.

Dancebandits - Sandy Wright bids farewell
|
It's been my honour and privileged to not only get to know but also get to play! with the legendary Sandy Wright over the past few years. Sandy is a complete original! A writer of modern folksong classics, former clown as Spike the Balloonman and tunesmith extraordinaire. There's hardly a day goes past without Sandy producing a new tune or song. His songs have been covered by many well known artist including Eddi Reader, Kris Drever and Aberfeldy. Sandy came up with the name Dance Bandits and was a driving force during the early days of the band. Sadly Sandy is retiring from live performance to focus on writing. We'll no doubt continue to "have a play" amongst the hills of the borders with current members Sarah McFadden and Joey Sanderson and occasional member and engineer Ben Ivitsky,
We're pleased to announce Sandy's replacement will be non other than Edinburgh folk legend Ewen Forfar. He looks almost exactly like Sandy so perhaps no-one will notice. Here he is calling the Canadian Barn Dance with us in the Waldorf Astoria.

Edinburgh Fringe 2017
During the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe I almost did a run of shows with Perrier Award Winner Phil Nicol, star of Whose Line is it Anyway and Blue Peter badge recipient Kirsty Newton and Edinburgh's own Gorillaz collaborator Emma Smith. Here's the amazing poster advertising our bonkers evening of mad fun. It looks great doesn't it? Unfortunately we had to stop the run after three shows because of noise complaints. A great shame! But it was fun while it lasted. I was in character as a young boy stuck in a lunatic asylum. Musicwise I was playing drums in the house band and singing one of my comedy songs. We had great guests lined up. Our headliners for the three nights we managed to put on were Ed Byrne Jimeoen and Funz and Games alongside a load of other brilliant acts. Jimeoen played my famous £40 guitar and I got asked to play for the Funz and Gamez adult show which was an absolute HOOT!
Also in 2017 I did my usual at The Blundabus with Bob Slayer and the Heroes of the Fringe gang. What a belter! We had two shows nominated for prizes at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards, Rob Kemp in The Elvis Dead and Mat Ewins for the main prize.
I was pretty busy this Fringe but I managed to pay a few visits to The Omnitorium where a few of my clowny pals were getting up to nonsense. It's always fun for me at Fringetime, so many of my clowny pals live so very far away but in August they're all here and they all tend to congregate and The Omnitorium is one of the gang huts. I did clown performances here for Dan Lees and Niel Frost of The Establishment (highly highly recommended) and and the endlessly wonderful Lucy Hopkins (not recommended at all give her a miss - joking)

Oceanallover - 2017 Season
|
It has been wonderful to join the Oceanallover crew in 2017 to perform Sea Hames up and down the country. The creation of the piece was spine-tinglingly free and fluid and involved everyone. Initially I thought I'd be employed primarily as a "musician who can move in an interesting manor" but very soon I was worried I'd be expected to blend into a company splattered with amazing movement practitioners. I needn't have worried, we began by workshopping some ideas and improvising within the space. Before I knew it I realised we were creating the piece right there and then. It went down so so well whereever we went and and recieved glorious reviews. I got to play electric guitar really loud. We also produced an album recorded at the wonderful Castlesound Studios. What a joy! Big Love and thanks to Alex Rigg and all the gang.
